Well-known doctors from institutes across the country would soon join the faculty at Jai Prakash Narayan All India Institute of Medical Sciences (JPNAIIMS).

The Union health ministry on Saturday notified names of medical teachers to be appointed in the first phase at JPNAIIMS. Around 24 teachers are expected to join the institute by mid-August. The move comes two weeks after the Centre gave green light to JPNAIIMS to start admission for 50 MBBS seats from the coming academic session.

The teachers have been selected for four subjects — anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and community and family medicine — taught in the first year of the MBBS course. “The teachers have been appointed in the rank of professor, additional professor, associate professor and assistant professor. At least five of them have been working with institutes abroad,” said JPNAIIMS director Dr G.K. Singh. Seven teachers are being recruited in the anatomy department. Dr Asima Bhattacharyya, who has been associated with Indian Institute of Sciences, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), would head the department.

Another BHU doctor, Paras Nath Singh, will head the department of physiology, which will have six teachers. The biochemistry department, too, will have six teachers. Dr Sadhana Sharma, who at present works with the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, will be its head.

Dr Neeraj Agarwal of BHU will head the community and family medicine department that will have four teachers.

The JPNAIIMS director added that an important component to begin the medical college would be in place once the doctors join the institution. Around 91 doctors in the grades of professor, additional professor, associate professor, assistant professors, senior residents and super-specialists would be recruited.
