Muzaffarpur: The district police have busted a network of youths, including teenaged boys, involved in home delivery of liquor in Muzaffarpur district and adjoining areas in north Bihar.

The youth were actively involved in smuggling to facilitate delivery of liquor cartons and bottles at the desired address by dodging the police and the public eye since the ban on alcohol in the state.

Acting on a tip-off, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Harprit Kaur pressed the quick response team (QRT) to bust the bootleggers' network.

The team led by a police officer, R.P. Gupta, laid a trap and barged into the rented portion of a house owned by a school teacher in Krishna Nagar of Yadav Nagar area under Sadar police station in the wee hours of Monday.

The house is owned by Anil Kumar, who teaches students at Zahid Government School situated in Park block of the district.

A group of youths had rented the house on the pretext of preparing forcompetitive examinations.

The police barged into the house and conducted through search operation and recovered 11 cartons of banned liquor from a parked car, four cartons from the rooms and a few bottles from the boot of two motorbikes used in the supply of liquor.

The SSP said the youths confessed to their involvement in smuggling and delivery liquor to make some fast buck.

Five youths - Sunu Kumar, Ujjawal Kumar, Rohit Kumar, Chotu and Ravi Kumar - have been arrested with the unlawful consignment.

All of them belonged to rural areas of the district where they used to supply liquor at the behest of big bootleggers .

The police have vital clues about running of this infamous trade, the SSP said. All those involved in smuggling of liquor will soon be arrested in order to root out this unholy practice of supplying liquor at the doorstep, the SSP said.

Sources said there was a proposal to provide 15 more vehicles to police stations to facilitate strict surveillance and vigilance to take on the bootleggers.

The district police have stepped up plan to check smuggling and conducting raids at the possible hideouts largely in the countryside areas.
