Patna College employees’ association boycotted work on Wednesday against a girl’s eve-teasing and threatened to continue with their agitation till illegal boarders were evicted from its hostels.

Some boarders of Jackson Hostel had allegedly teased the daughter of a non-teaching employee on Tuesday. When employees reached the hostel and urged the inmates to stop troubling the girl, some boarders assaulted the employees. Aggrieved over the incident, the employees’ association threatened to close the college till the administration took action and evacuated illegal boarders from the hostels.

All college work were suspended and studies took a hit.

The employees’ association has decided to stall facilities such as power, water supply, mess facilities and newspaper and magazine supply to boarders living in various hostels of Patna College.

A meeting was also held at the college seminar hall between principal Rash Bihari Prasad Singh, Patna University dean (students’ welfare) K.N. Paswan and other officials with the employees’ association members on Wednesday.

Manoj Rajak, a non-teaching employee of Patna College, said: “It has become a routine affairs for boarders of Patna College hostels to create nuisance on campus. Earlier, the boarders used to clash with fellow students. Now, they are not even sparing the employees. Teasing girls and female employees has become common.” He added: “Till the college administration takes action against erring students, the employees would not return to work.”

Sources said this was not the first time the employees have staged an open protest with their association threatening to boycott work.

However, on all occasions, the college and university administration have intervened to settle the matter.”

Principal Singh said: “The college administration has decided to write a letter requesting the district administration to evacuate the illegal boarders from hostels.”

Earlier also, Patna College had written to the government to get the hostels vacated, but no action was initiated. The college and district administrations passed the buck on to each other. While the college claimed no action was taken despite a letter being sent to the district administration, the latter said they had not received any letter on such an issue.

Based on the complaint of non-teaching employees, the college administration has lodged an FIR against Dipak Kumar (third-year undergraduate), Manoj Kumar (third-year undergraduate), and Shubhankar Raj (first-year undergraduate).

Students, too, are upset with growing incidents of violence on college campus.

A second-year history undergraduate student said: “The college and university administrations should take strict action against erring students. Just passing a directive doesn’t work. If police and the varsity take strong action against these illegal boarders, they would think twice before committing such acts.”
