Patna, Sept. 23: A middle-aged woman, Amrita Singh, who was allegedly thrown off Mahatma Gandhi Setu by her husband Adarsh Kumar last night, today claimed hearing the noise of a moving train while hitting the water.

Boatmen reportedly recovered the woman near Rasulpur village under Patori police station of Samastipur district, around 60km downstream. The woman, who knows how to swim, survived the river current. However, no FIR was lodged till reports last came in.

“Earlier, the woman had said she had been thrown off Gandhi Setu. Today, she said she had heard the noise of a moving train while hitting the water. There are no railway tracks near Gandhi Setu in Patna. But the Gandak in Hajipur has got a railway bridge and a road bridge. So we doubt that she could have been thrown in Hajipur,” Patrori deputy superintendent of police Arun Kumar said. The officer said the woman had been sent to Hajipur’s Town police station along with policemen.

“If she had been thrown off from there, an FIR will be lodged in Hajipur and the police will probe the matter. Till now, there have been no arrests,” the officer said.

Amrita, a resident of Aurangabad district, had arrived in Patna from Amritsar around 10 days back. In her statement to the police, she claimed to have fallen in love with Adarsh, a resident of Hanuman Nagar in Patna, some years ago in Amritsar. Adarsh had allegedly not revealed about their marriage to his family.

“Amrita came down and was staying in Jakkanpur with Adarsh and his mother. Yesterday, Adarsh, took Amrita and two other friends for a car ride. Then, he allegedly pushed her off the bridge.”
