Patna: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)-Patna has rusticated a final-year MBBS student for three years for allegedly creating ruckus in the college hostel in a drunken state on February 27.
The authorities later forced the medic to vacate the college hostel.
Sources said the youth from Kerala had been accused of entering the girls' hostel in a drunken state and of having undressed himself after taking part in a pre-Holi bash in the college. The AIIMS-Patna dean's office issued the rustication letter on February 28, a day after the incident.
The letter said on disciplinary grounds, the competent authority had ordered the rustication of the student ( The Telegraph is withholding the name of the student that was mentioned in the rustication letter) of MBBS-2014 batch from the institute for three years. The Telegraph also has a copy of the letter issued by the dean's office, which says that during the three-year time period, the institute, including the college, the hospital and the hostel will remain out of bounds for the student.
A copy of the letter was sent to the AIIMS-Patna director's office apart from the office of the deputy director (administration), the controller of examinations, AIIMS-Patna, head of various departments, wardens of the boys' and girls' hostels.
AIIMS-Patna director Prabhat Kumar Singh refuted claims that the medic had been rusticated. But he said the medic had been suspended from college with immediate effect. Singh admitted the college authorities made the student vacate the hostel right after the incident.
"We had got complaints from the girls' hostel that he had entered there in an inebriated state. We have sent the student back home," said Singh. "Right now, we are charting the future course of caution. We have checked the college background of the student and found out that he was not a bad guy. He definitely had consumed something, which made him act differently. We had to pacify the agitating girl students, so we had floated the news of his rustication but we will not do that as it would affect his career," said Singh.
Another administrative official said they were forced to crack the whip on the student in the face of the girl students' threat of calling their guardians and getting an FIR lodged with the police.
AIIMS sources, however, pointed out that students had bhang-mixed lassi at the party; the accused drank from it. They said the student had not completely undressed himself. "Only his lungi fell off under the influence of liquor. He was wearing his undergarment and kurta when he entered the girls' hostel and started running amok," said a source.
Some AIIMS officials are angry over the AIIMS administration for taking action against the student. "Students organised a DJ party in the middle of the campus for Holi Milan with due permission of the authorities from 6pm. The boys and even girls of the MBBS and nursing colleges took part in it. Many girls were even seen in shorts. Illicit use of cannabis can't be ignored. The student against whom action has been taken is known as a shy and studious boy. He must have drank under peer pressure. Why is only the boy being punished and not the other drunk male and female students? What about the role of the security guards who are paid to protect?" asked an official under the cover of anonymity.
Asked whether the students had taken permission for the party, director Singh said the students had taken no permission. He justified it saying that permission was not required because an informal get-together was organised and not a proper party.
