Patna: Patna police on Tuesday arrested Shyam Babu Singh, the suspended special branch police officer, on charges of duping Rs 2 crore from several people.

Singh along with his wife Ankita had duped many promising them to provide land and houses. The couple had several cases against them in Patna and Ranchi. Even a court in Patna had issued warrant against Singh.

Chhapra resident Girish Kumar had filed a complaint at Rupaspur police station a few days back that Shyam and his Ankita had taken Rs 55 lakh from him promising to provide land in the area.

Dipak Kumar, the station house officer at Rupaspur police station, said: "A few years back Shyam Babu Singh had taken Rs 55 lakh from Girish Kumar in lieu of selling his house at Vikash Vihar under Rupaspur. But the house was never handed over to Girish."

Shyam later agreed to return the money and gave a cheque of Rs 55 lakh to Girish, which bounced. When the matter came to the fore, Patna SSP Manu Maharaaj directed the Rupaspur police station to nab Girish. They raided Shyam's house at Vikash Vihar and arrested him.
