Police and Darbhanga Medical College (DMC) officials heaved a sigh of relief after an MBBS student of the institute surrendered on Wednesday evening and gave a written declaration to not commit suicide.

The student, Kapil Deo Chawdhary (52) of the 1995 batch of DMC, admitted that he had sent SMSes to the head of department, medicine, B.K. Singh threatening to commit suicide if the examiners did not pass him in his 9th semester final examination.

On Wednesday, he had claimed that examiners did not pass him as as he was a Dalit. But on Thursday, he said it was not the case. "There is no Dalit consideration in studies. You mediapersons, please end this episode. Let me focus on preparations for exams to be conducted in April. I sent the SMSes owing to tension," he added.

The station house officer (SHO) of Benta police station, Surendra Paswan, said: "On February 15, Singh wrote to us about the SMSes. We asked the student to surrender. He promised to do so but sought time."

Some of the portions of the declaration by Kapil read like this: " Main marna ya atmahatya nahin karna chahta hoon. Main fail hone ke baad tension me request (SMSes to Singh) kiya thaa. Main atmahatya ke vichaar se mukt hoon. Main bhavna mein aakar SMSes kiya thaa. Main atmahatya ka koi prayas nahin karoonga jisse kisi ko pareshani ho (I don't want to die or commit suicide. I requested (Singh) after I failed and was tensed. I am not thinking of committing suicide. I sent the SMSes as I was disturbed. I will not try to commit suicide and put others in trouble)."

Kapil sent 28 SMSes to Singh. Some of them read: " Viva (exam) mein pass nahin karaiyega to hamari laash niklegi... Main jeevit lash ki tarah hoon, medicine ke layak nahin hoon... Happy birthday to you sir..."

Singh said the student sent him SMSes between January 31 and February 15. "I informed the principal and the police as a preventive measure. I can understand his frustration. He is over here for more than 20 years. He has failed in the 9th semester for two times. There is no restriction by the Medical Council Of India on the number of the attempts by a student to pass his final examination. The allegations of Dalit consideration are rubbish," he said.
