Patna, Aug. 29: Some rowdy students this evening misbehaved with the vice-chancellor (VC) of Patna University, Shambhu Nath Singh, in his chamber demanding postponement of the BEd entrance exam scheduled for August 31, the day the country is likely to celebrate Id.
Four students led by Tammana, a member of the NCP students’ wing, barged into the VC’s chamber around 4.30pm, shocking Singh and other officers in his chamber. They smartly sat in chairs without waiting for the permission of the VC.
When a shocked VC enquired about their identity, Tammana rudely retorted: “First ask others in the room to leave. I want to talk to you alone.”
The Telegraph and several other officials were witness to the student’s audacity. For a few minutes, the VC was speechless. He failed to comprehend what was going on.
The students kept on shouting at the VC, alleging that he never listened to their problems. They said the time between 4pm and 5pm that Singh (the VC) had fixed to meet the students was not convenient to them.
Hearing commotion inside the VC’s chamber, the official security guard of Singh, R.D. Paswan, entered the room and tried to pacify the students. But they abused Paswan and threatened him with dire consequences if he tried to interfere in the issue.
Tammana, shouting ferociously, shoved the guard. The uproar continued for about 10 minutes but no other officials in the adjacent rooms bothered about what was going on in the VC’s chamber.
The students’ main plea was to postpone the date of the BEd entrance examination as it was clashing with Id. The VC asked them to behave politely so that he could listen to their petition. But the students kept on shouting at him.
Tammana even questioned the way Singh was appointed the VC. He alleged that Singh was appointed VC on the mercy of the Congress leadership and with favour from Raj Bhavan and so he cannot ignore students’ bodies, especially the NCP and the NSUI, the students’ wing of the Congress. .
In the meantime, the VC’s private assistant informed other officials about the incident. Sensing trouble, the rowdy students came out of the VC’s room. But before leaving they again threatened the security guard and tried to snatch his service revolver.
A little later, senior officials of the varsity, including dean, students’ welfare, P.K. Poddar, proctor Shardendu and BN College professor M.N. Sinha, reached the VC’s chamber. Sources said the university administration was in the process of lodging FIR against the rowdy students. The VC later told The Telegraph: “I have never witnessed such type of unruly behaviour in my career and I am not going to tolerate such incidents.”
