Gaya, April 22: A majority of private clinics remained closed in Gaya today following a daylong strike call given against an incident of misbehaviour against doctors at Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College and Hospital (ANMMCH).

Relatives of a patient had misbehaved with Dr K.K. Lohani, associate professor in medicine department, on the hospital premises. Outdoor patient department (OPD) at ANMMCH and the Pilgrim hospital remained closed. However, the emergency services remained operational at both the hospitals, where new admissions were also accepted. ANMMCH superintendent Sita Ram told The Telegraph that there were a total of 37 new admissions in the OPD today. Nursing homes of orthopaedic surgeon Farasat Hussain, child specialist Vijay Karan, general surgeon-cum-physician Pandey Rajeshwari Prasad and other doctors also remained closed today in protest against the incident. Treatment was provided only to the already admitted patients. The Gaya branch of Indian Medical Association (IMA), meanwhile, has threatened to disrupt work across the emergency, casualty and post-mortem services for an indefinite period if their three-point demand is not met within seven days.

IMA Gaya branch president Shardanand Sinha said that their demand include permanent security arrangements for doctors, implementation of the Medical Professional Protection Act and legal action against those involved in violence against doctors. He said Nitish Kumar had promised earlier that the act will be implemented, but nothing has happened so far.
