Karate kid…

Is 17-year-old Surabhi Prachi. She has won bronze, silver and gold medals in several national and international tournaments, including two at a recent state-level event.

Interest in sport…

Was encouraged by Surabhi’s parents who felt karate was a good skill to learn for girls. Then a Class VI student, Surabhi took up the martial art at her alma mater in 2006.

Fast learner…

Is Surabhi. She soon realised karate was not only good for self-defence but also helped her remain active and healthy. Her first competition was the 23rd National Itosu-Ryu Karate Championship in May 2007.

Good collection…

Of awards Surabhi has. At the Shito Cup 2011, organised at Moin-ul-Haq Stadium this month, she won a gold and a bronze in two different categories.

Parental support…

Is important for Surabhi, who is inspired by father Satyendra Kumar Sinha, an engineer, and mother Dr Rekha Kumari to work hard.

Nimble toes…

Surabhi has. A black belt in karate, Surabhi is also trained in kathak. She she started learning kathak 11 years ago and has won several dance competitions since then.

Olympics medal…

Is what Surabhi wants to win. She also aspires to be a doctor.
