Class X
Mount Carmel, Patna
Karate kid…
Snigdha Singh (16) secured the first rank in kumite (one of the three main sections of karate training, along with kata and kihon) in Jharkhand State Karate Championship in 2007 and 2008. She, along with two other players — Nancy and Jyoti, also got the first position in “Team Kata” in the 10th Jharkhand State Karate Championship, held in Bokaro.
Interest in sport...
Got Snigdha to train under Sensei Prakash Kumar, a Black Belt 3rd Dan, who is also the karate coach at her school. Snigdha had a fascination for the sport since Class V and in 2006 she started learning karate.
Family support...
Pushed Snigdha to pursue her interest in the sport. Her father Shree Kant Singh, a professor at Patna University, encouraged her to learn karate. She was also inspired by her brothers Kumar Shashwat (karate player) and Arvind Kumar Singh (taekwondo player).
Studies...
Are very important for Snigdha. She appeared for her Class X exam this year and secured around 90 per cent marks. She wants to go for law studies after Class XII. Karate remains her passion and she wants to represent the country at international events.
Inspiration...
For Snigdha is ‘Shihan’ T. Mohan Raja, national karate player from India. She wants to achieve the position which Raja acquired in 2006 — Black Belt 6th Dan — which is the highest rank given by ‘Shorin-Ryu Matsubayashi Karate-Do-Federation’, a US-based karate body.
