The vigilance investigation bureau has asked Muzaffarpur SSP Vivek Kumar to probe allegations that a retired assistant sub-inspector amassed property disproportionate to income.

A Juran Chhapra resident had written to the VIB's director-general alleging that Bhuwaneshwar Singh, who was posted in Bettiah in West Champaran, had accumulated unaccounted wealth worth around Rs 200 crore. The SSP has sought a report from the DSP (Town) within 10 days.

According to the complaint, during his posting in West Champaran, Singh allegedly came into contact with the ganja (cannabis) mafia of the region. A resident of Saran's Maiki village, Singh reportedly purchased 62 cottahs of land and owned three multi-storied buildings in Muzaffarpur.

He had also made huge investments in real estate and insurance policies. The letter claimed that Singh's father, a small farmer, is living in a big house at Ahiapur while his son owns a commercial complex near Baria bus stand in Muzaffarpur district.

"The police officer in question was under the VIB scanner since 2016," said a senior official posted at the VIB's office in Patna. "The probe was handed over to the Muzaffarpur SSP as the police would also look into the cop's alleged links with drug traffickers."

Authoritative sources said that once the investigation is complete, the VIB would lodge a formal disproportionate assets case against Bhuwaneshwar. "Since January, 41 government employees have been booked on charges of corruption across the state," a senior bureau official said.
