Gaya, April 25: Female literacy is on the rise in the state but Rajkiya Kanya High School, the town’s sole government high school for girls, is in a shambles.
The administration allegedly has failed to provide security to the girls, maintain the school building and curb encroachment. The most serious problem for the girls is the unabated entry of locals, including youths, into the campus during school hours.
A large portion of the school land towards the northern end of the campus has also been encroached upon and turned into a slum. Efforts to restrict the entry of slum dwellers into the campus have proved futile.
At present, there are around 600 girls in classes IX and X.
The school administration has, on several occasions, lodged complaints at the local Civil Lines police station. However, one or two rounds of police patrolling are hardly enough to keep outsiders at bay.
Principal Kusum Kumari told The Telegraph the school has now been upgraded to an Intermediate college, classes for which would start only after the ongoing construction of a separate building is completed.
The education department allotted Rs 39 lakh to the school in July 2009, which included Rs 26 lakh for the building and the remaining for the purchase of furniture, sports items and laboratory apparatus. However, Rs 13.5 lakh was returned, as the safety of the items could not be ensured for want of space.
A 10-room hostel was also constructed for the girls but because of the insecurity on campus, the hostel rooms were not allotted to students.
