Bhojpuri singer-actor and newly elected BJP MP from North-East Delhi, Manoj Tiwari, has set his sights on the inclusion of Bhojpuri language in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution.

Sharing his thoughts with The Telegraph, Manoj claimed that he had already spoken to Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi on this.

“As being the first Bhojpuri actor to become an MP, my first duty is to get the constitutional status to the Bhojpuri language, which has given me name and fame. The previous government just kept on making promises that the language would get the official status but it never happened. However, the new government under the leadership of Modiji will do it” said Tiwari.

Till now, Tiwari has lent his voice for more than 210 Bhojpuri albums and worked in over 112 Bhojpuri films.

Tiwari, who defeated Aam Aadmi Party candidate Anand Kumar with the margin of 1,44,084 votes, said: “Bhojpuri is not only spoken in Bihar but also in several countries like Fiji, Guyana and Suriname. It was really disappointing that former Speaker Meira Kumar, who hailed from the Bhojpuri-speaking belt, could not do anything for the language.”

His relation with politics is not new, however. In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, he contested on Samajwadi Party ticket from Gorakhpur constituency but lost.

Now, after becoming an MP, Tiwari has also decided to cut down the film, songs and stage shows.

About doing anything for Bihar, Tiwari said: “Bihar is my birthplace. Setting up a film city in Bihar is a long-pending demand but till now nothing has been done on this part. I shall ensure that Bihar get its first film city in Patna itself. Though I am an MP from North-East Delhi but Bihar will remain my motherland.”
