Patna: A mob lynched a man and badly injured another when they were trying to flee after committing a robbery at a jewellery shop in Siwan, around 137km north-west of Patna, on Sunday.
The injured man has been admitted to Siwan sadar hospital in a critical condition. Police said a gang of armed men robbed a jewellery store at Shyam Bazar around 3pm and opened fire, injuring shopkeeper Ajay Kumar alias Tuntun. Local traders gave the robbers chase and managed to get hold of two.
Siwan superintendent of police Navin Chandra Jha said the deceased has been identified as Sachin Singh, a resident of Mirganj in neighbouring Gopalganj. His associate Prakash Pandey has been referred to Patna Medical College and Hospital. A country-made pistol, two live cartridges and an empty were found at the spot.
Sachin's name had figured in the loot of Rs 4.5 lakh from an SBI customer service centre in Gopalganj last week.
"Over six cases of 'serious nature' were pending against Sachin in Gopalganj," he added.
The police said Sachin, of late, had formed a gang and was spreading its tentacles in Gopalganj.
An unruly mob had recently thrashed a youth brutally and tried to set him ablaze at Biharsharif in Nalanda.
