Train teachers in schools today to make students aware tomorrow.

Police in the state capital have adopted this strategy to make the traffic system concrete and sensitise the future generation about motor vehicle rules.

According to the plan, traffic police personnel, in co-ordination with the district transport office, will visit various schools in Patna and teach road rules to the teachers. After receiving the training, the teachers will guide their respective students.

“The plan has been prepared and the programme will be launched soon,” superintendent of police (traffic) Chandrika Prasad said on Monday, the concluding day of Traffic Awareness Week.

“There are many schools in Patna. Our initial plan is to divide the schools in terms of area. We will then chalk out the plans on how to approach them. Earlier, the police had been visiting schools and guiding the students about traffic safety rules and regulations. We now want to approach the teachers, who are closely connected with the students. It’s a fact that the students always listen to their teachers. The police believe that if a teacher talks to the students about the dos and don’ts of traffic, they will connect more and will follow the rules,” the officer added.

Prasad said the police would seek help from other departments for the initiative. “We will have a talk with the district transport officer. We want to inform the teachers about some of the important sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. We will also discuss the finer aspects of the laws with the teachers. We are planning to launch the programme by the end of January,” he added.

On the Traffic Awareness Week, the officer said: “It was a successful programme. Messages on traffic safety and regulations were put up at various roundabouts in the city. Besides, there were round-the-clock announcement of various dos and don’ts at other intersections of the city. The aim was to make commuters aware of the traffic rules.”
