The Gaya circle of income tax (I-T) department has decided to tighten the noose around people who provide false information about their annual income.
The I-T department circle is revising its present database to include business establishments with huge turnovers.
The department will fix a target for tax collection during the ongoing 2012-13 fiscal on the basis of the revised database.
During 2011-12, the department collected around Rs 6 crore as tax in Gaya. In the same period, it collected around Rs 5 crore as penalty from six districts — Gaya, Jehanabad, Aurangabad, Arwal, Rohtas and Kaimur — under Gaya circle.
The high collection of tax in the form of penalty has pushed the department to consider revising its database of taxpayers.
Sources said several areas in the districts under the Gaya circle report huge business turnover but are out of the department’s purview. These areas will now be included in the revised target.
A senior I-T department official, preferring anonymity, said the modification aims to increase tax collection in the circle.
The department will also crosscheck the records of persons filing annual tax returns available with the department and the records available in their respective business establishments.
In case of salaried-class assessees, the bank accounts and other property details will be verified against the records available with the department.
Verification of records will be made through I-T inspectors. The available database shows around 50,000 businessmen and salaried-class people pay taxes every year.
