Patna: A rape-accused man walked out on bail on Thursday after he married the complainant on a Begusarai court's orders.
Kundan Kumar (25), a resident of Sakarbasa village under the jurisdiction of Cheria Bariarpur police station in Begusarai district, around 110km east of Patna, was lodged in the district jail for over three months.
On Wednesday, Kundan's marriage with the rape survivor was solemnised at a temple on the premises of the court in the presence of lawyers and family members.
Gyanvardhan Ojha, a local resident, said: "Such an event was organised in the district court for the first time. Lawyers and litigants lined up to garland the guests and the couple.
"The wedding was different than usual and the ceremony was minimal," Ojha added.
The court, headed by additional district and sessions judge Krishna Murari Sharan, had said Kundan must marry the woman to secure bail.
Initially, Kundan hesitated but he relented after consulting his lawyer, Rishikesh Pathak.
Through his legal counsel, Kundan had said he was ready to marry the girl .
The court warned Kundan with jail if he dared to torture the girl, who was a minor when she was raped.
Begusarai special public prosecutor (SPP) Kumari Manisha said on Thursday that two witnesses, Suchak Ram and Ramdhyan Mahto, were produced in court to get their statement recorded.
The duo supported their statements they had earlier given to the local police in connection with the rape of the girl.
The SPP said that the case (66/18) was lodged with the Begusarai Town police station early this year against Kundan on the statement of the girl's father.
The SPP said Kundan was booked under Section 376 (rape) of the IPC and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act.
The girl belonged to a village falling under the jurisdiction of Chhaurahi police station in Begusarai district.
Later, a compromise petition was filed in the court.
"The girl was below the age of 18 when the incident took place. So the accused was also booked under Pocso Act," an investigating officer said.
The investigating officer said that the girl was married on the directive of the court after she turned 18.
Kundan had been repentant about the crime since his arrest, the officer added.
