Patna: A court here on Friday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for raping his minor daughter.
The court, headed by additional district and sessions judge I Ravindra Nath Tripathi, who is also in-charge of the special Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) court, had earlier found Sanjeev Kumar (45) guilty under Section 6 (aggravated penetrative sexual assault) of the Pocso Act, 2012. The court also imposed a penalty of Rs 1 lakh on Sanjeev.
The court sent a copy of the order to the Bihar Legal Services Authority so that the rape survivor is given compensation - 80 per cent of the fine realised.
Pocso special public prosecutor Suresh Chandra Prasad appeared on behalf of the prosecution, while Om Prakash defended the accused.
An FIR was lodged with Khajekalan police station in Patna City on July 4, 2013. The victim said she was sexually assaulted by her father since the age of 12. When she narrated her woes to her mother, the mother tried stop him. However, he did not pay any heed to her and the sexual exploitation continued.
The girl lodged a police complaint, leading to the arrest of the tormentor in July 2013. The police submitted the charge sheet on October 1 and the court took cognisance the same day. The prosecution produced seven witnesses who supported girl's complaints.
