The father of a budding techie missing for the past nine days is suffering from an uncanny fear after receiving several ransom calls and a long wait near Gandhi Maidan with the demanded money.

Ravi (22), a student of National Institute of Technology, Patna, went missing on June 23. Nine days on, his father — Ramesh Rajak (55) — feels the police were not doing enough to rescue his son.

Rajak, a teacher in Madhepura, has been camping in the room of Ravi at Devki Nivas Lodge from June 24, a day after the NIT student went missing. He has been receiving ransom calls from June 25. Even on Sunday evening, someone demanded Rs 20 lakh from Rajak for the safe release of Ravi.

“My son is missing since June 23. The kidnappers first demanded Rs 6 lakh ransom. Then the sum was increased to Rs 20 lakh. Even after nine days, the police seem to have no clue. Now, they are even ignoring me. On Sunday, I made repeated calls to the deputy superintendent of police (Patna City), Sushil Kumar, but he did not receive my call. My faith in the police has been shattered. I hope everything is fine with Ravi,” Rajak told The Telegraph on Sunday.

Ravi went missing on June 23 evening and the first ransom call was made on June 25 from his cellphone. More calls followed and the ransom amount was increased to Rs 20 lakh.

“I am ready to cough up the amount. On June 26, when I was sitting at the DSP’s office, I got a call from a person who asked me to recharge my son’s cellphone. Ravi has three cellphones. I received a call from one of Ravi’s number (9431830345) on June 29 around 3.30 pm,” Rajak said.

“I was asked to come at Gandhi Maidan with the money. From 4pm to 10pm, some of my relatives and I wandered in the area but no one came. The police were also informed about the development,” Rajak, the headmaster of Madhepura-based Abhyas Government Middle School, said.

Rajak said he had called up Sultanganj police station on Sunday and was given vague replies.

“The cops are not telling me anything properly. At my house in Madhepura, my wife Sunaina, and my three daughters are sobbing all day and night. I am putting up at Devki Nivas Lodge where my son stays. I have heard delay in cracking kidnapping cases often leads to catastrophe.”

Several attempts to contact the DSP proved futile. Even city senior superintendent of police Amrit Raj could not be contacted. However, an officer at Sultanganj police station said they were working on the case.

“One person has been arrested but the boy is yet to be recovered. The cellphone tower locations have been traced but the boy and the alleged kidnapper/s seem to be moving around,” the officer said.
