Patna witnessed rain on Thursday, bringing some respite from the humidity and the rising temperature for the past couple of days.
The rain, which started early morning, kept occurring throughout the day. The state capital recorded 38.2mm of rain on Thursday owing to which the maximum temperature plunged down to 29.5°C on Thursday, 3°C below the normal while the minimum stood at 26.2°C.
Currently, a trough line is passing through Nawada. This system development is primarily responsible for the rain that lashed the city on Thursday, said a senior scientist at the Patna Met department, Anand Shankar.
He said: "The moisture incursion coming from the Bay of Bengal side is also responsible for the rain. Rain will continue on Friday and Saturday, though with lesser intensity."
The India Meteorological Department (IMD), in its weather forecast on Thursday, stated: "The axis of monsoon trough at mean sea level now passes through Anupgarh, Narnaul, Gwalior, Varanasi, Nawada, Purulia, Balasore and thence south-eastwards to east central Bay of Bengal. A north-south trough at 0.9km above mean sea level runs from east Bihar to north coastal Andhra Pradesh and across Gangetic Bengal and interior Odisha."
The IMD further stated: "A cyclonic circulation is marked over Jharkhand and adjoining areas. With this, scattered light to moderate rains are expected over Bihar, southeast Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Gangetic Bengal, Odisha and north-eastern states."
A Patna Met department official said a fresh western disturbance was seen over Afghanistan and north and central Pakistan, bringing rain to northern and eastern India.
There was waterlogging at a few areas though Thursday's rain was not entirely responsible for it, rather, the waterlogging menace has been persisting for a few days.
The areas that were waterlogged were Mithapur Bus Stand Road, Indira Nagar, Khasmahal area, Chandmari Road and Ram Lakhan Path Mor. All these areas come under Kankerbagh locality, one of the worst areas affected due to waterlogging every year. The other areas submerged in water were Rajiv Nagar, Alka Colony, Sandalpur and Saristabad.
The inclement weather also resulted in flight delays, both coming and departing from Patna. While the Mumbai-Patna GoAir flight (G8 585) landed here 1.22 hours behind schedule, the Jet Airways flight from Delhi to Patna (9W 730) was 33 minutes late behind schedule.
Similarly, the Patna-Delhi flight of Jet Airways departed 23 minutes late while the GoAir's flight from Patna to Ranchi (G8 585) departed 1.19 hours behind the schedule.
