CBI sleuths on Friday arrested senior surgeon Umesh Prasad, posted at Danapur railway hospital under the jurisdiction of Danapur railway division of East Central Railway, on charges of accepting Rs 20,000 as bribe. The seized cash was in new Rs 2000 notes.
Acting on a complaint, a team of the CBI's anti-corruption cell raided Umesh's house at Railway Medical Colony in Danapur, on the outskirts of Patna, and nabbed him. The team recovered the money from his possession.
Umesh complained of severe chest pain while the search was being conducted and was rushed to Danapur railway hospital for treatment. A senior CBI official said the search went on till evening, despite Umesh's alleged medical emergency.
The surgeon has been accused of demanding bribes from employees and their relatives to issue medical certificates. The team will interrogate Umesh once he returns from the hospital, said an official who did not wish to be identified. This is the second time that Umesh has fallen into the CBI's net, the official added.
