Patna University is running two months behind schedule in conducting examinations and admissions. If that’s not bad enough for the varsity, snapped power connection plagues Patna Science College.

Ravi Kumar, a second-semester geology student, is waiting for his examination and fretting about the delay in start of third semester. By now, the third semester should have taken off. But, the varsity is two months late in conducting the second semester examinations. Even the dates have not been announced.

First semester classes of the new postgraduate session, which were meant to start in the first week of July, are also delayed. The admission process is still on.

Ravi said: “Some teachers told us that the second semester examinations will start from September 19 but we doubt it. The process to fill up examination forms has not even started. We will be overburdened in the third and fourth semesters because of delay in starting the third semester classes. The final two semesters are crucial for us, as many students start preparing for the various competitive examinations at that time.”

A senior Patna University teacher said: “The postgraduate session is being delayed and it will be a challenge for us to complete the first and third semesters on time. Call it a curse or the administration’s lack of attention but the varsity is going through a bad phase.”

The Patna Science College, which assumes a pride of place in Patna University, has been without power for more than a month. There are, however, no takers to attend to the problem at hand.

Sources said Bihar State Power (Holding) Company Limited has disconnected power supply to the varsity’s different constituent departments for its alleged failure to clear energy dues. It had also disconnected power supply to the varsity in the first week of June. It was restored after the authorities sent an SOS to senior state government officials.

Now, power has again gone off at Patna Science College.

Gaurav Sharma, a second-year undergraduate student of the institution, said: “You can imagine our condition. We are unable to do our practical classes regularly because of the power disruption.”

Patna University pro-vice-chancellor Sudipto Adhikari said: “The university administration is trying its best to restore power. We have written letters to the power holding company and they have assured us that power will be restored soon.”

The varsity administration is also under fire from a section of teachers for its alleged failure to protect computer centre in-charge K.P Singh, who was beaten up by students on Thursday evening and later arrested. Singh, the students alleged, was destroying evidence related to vigilance inquiry into former vice-chancellor S.N. Singh.
