Patna, June 5: The increase in the number of students enrolling in schools across the state has not translated into improved results in the Intermediate exam, as the overall pass percentage and the number of students securing first division have gone down compared to the past two years.

Sources said 35.74 per cent students secured first division in the science and commerce streams. Around 3,33,000 students of these two streams took the exam this year, whose results were published today.

The results of the humanities stream have not yet been published.

In the science stream, 37.3 per cent students got a first division. Last year, it was 50.89 per cent and in 2009, it was 53.22 per cent.

The pass percentage of the science students, too, has come down this year. It stood at 90.81 per cent. In 2010, it was 92.51 per cent and in 2009 it was 91.85.

For the students of commerce stream, too, good results have been rare.

Only 34.19 per cent students got a first division in commerce. In 2010, it was 44.97 per cent, while in 2009 it was 48.63 per cent.

The pass percentage in commerce stream has gone up slightly, though. This year, it is 94.47 per cent whereas last year it was 93.41. The pass percentage for commerce students in 2009 was 92.1.

After releasing the Intermediate results, state human resource development minister P.K. Shahi congratulated the successful students.

He said: “Those students who have not fared well this year need proper guidance and counselling from both their teachers as well as their guardians so that they can perform well next year.”

Most of the toppers this year are from the districts.

Shambhavi, a student of SNNR College in Chamtha of Begusarai district, stood first. She got 431 out of 500.

Shubham Shandilya, who stood second, is also from Begusarai. The student of MRJDI College in Bishnupur scored 424.

In the commerce stream, Shashi Krishna Kumar, a student of NDJ College of Andhrathari in Madhubani district, is the topper. Shashi got 417.

Aman Hussain, a student Gulab Memorial College of Bettiah in West Champaran, came second. He scored 414.

Rajmani Singh, chairman, Bihar School Examination Board, said: “The good results are because of the various schemes initiated by the state government in the education sector.”

He added that the results of the humanities stream would be declared in a few days.

This year, Intermediate results can be downloaded from www.biharonline.gov.in, www.biharboard.bih.nic.in and www.bseb.minisoftsolutions.com.

The results of the Patna region were nothing to write home about. No student from the city ranked in the top 15 in the science stream. In the commerce stream, five students featured among the top 15.

Andalib, a student of Government Women’s College in Gulzarbagh, stood seventh.

In the Patna region, 61,742 science students took the examination, of which 57,671 students passed.

The pass percentage for the science students was 93.4.

In the commerce stream, 13,538 students took the exam. Of them, 12,641 passed.
