Patna: The Janata Dal United stands for state funding of elections. This has been mentioned in the party's resolution that was adopted during its two-day national executive meet held in Delhi over the weekend.

Sharing details of the resolution, a JDU leader on Tuesday said: "We are supporting the idea of state funding of elections because it would give a level playing field for big and small political parties, thus ending the massive inequality in terms of resources and funds among big and small political parties."

The idea of state funding has been mentioned in the resolution dealing with holding simultaneous elections of parliament and state assemblies.

Even though the JDU has expressed support for the idea, the party led by Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar has also raised several issues which it said need to be addressed before the implementation of the simultaneous polls idea.

One such issue is related to the states facing political instability.

The party's resolution specifically mentions this topic and says that a solution would have to be worked out to face the situation arising in case a state government fails to complete its term.

The JDU resolution also talks of availability of resources with the Election Commission of India for conducting simultaneous polls and also considering the time taken by a voter in casting his/her vote as s/he would have to vote separately for the Parliament and Assembly elections through different EVMs.

"We believe in addressing any issue comprehensively and that is why our resolution touched almost every point while supporting the idea of conducting simultaneous elections for Parliament and state Assemblies," said the JDU leader.

He said that the need of the hour was a detailed study of all such aspects, and an effort should also be made to develop consensus on this issue by holding dialogue with all political parties.
