Patna, April 15: The criminals trying to vitiate the panchayat elections would face bullets. The security personnel deployed on election duty would be given clear instruction to fire at them instead of opening fire in the air.

After reviewing the preparedness for the panchayat polls in Patna, Bhojpur, Buxar and Nalanda districts commencing from April 20, Bihar director-general of police (DGP) Neel Mani today said: “There will be effective firing instead of opening fire in the air to disperse the troublemakers at the polling stations this time.”

Home secretary Amir Subhani was also present at the joint press conference at the secretariat.

“If required, we will use helicopters for aerial surveillance in the Naxalite-hit areas,” Mani said, adding the security personnel would thwart the attempts of the Maoists to intimidate the voters. The borders of the state as well as the districts would be sealed to check the transportation of illegal firearms and illicit liquor.

“No candidate will be allowed to use money and muscle power to influence the electorate,” the DGP said. The station house officers have been asked to take stern action against the contestants if they were found guilty of attempting to vitiate the poll process.

Candidate arrested

Ragini Devi, a candidate for the post of mukhiya (village head), was arrested today from her home in Siwan for violating the model code of conduct. Sources said a week ago police seized bottles of liquor and fake stamps from the vehicle of the candidate.
