Patna, Sept. 2: Additional director-general (headquarters) S.K. Singhal has suggested that senior police officers adopt important traffic junctions in the state capital to help streamline traffic.

After the discussion with Singhal, Patna senior superintendent of police (SSP) Manu Maharaaj issued orders in which 17 such traffic junctions were identified across the city. Singhal has volunteered to adopt the Rajbanshi Nagar Hanuman Mandir roundabout and Maharaaj the Income Tax roundabout, which together take the total number to 19.

The list comprises senior officers, which includes the superintendent of police (SP), the additional superintendent of police (ASP), the deputy superintendent of police (DSP) and one sub-divisional police officer (SDPO).

'It was ADG (headquarters) S.K. Singhal Sir's suggestion and I am just following his orders. He has also adopted one such junction,' Maharaaj told The Telegraph.

The 17 such locations identified by the police include Hartali Chowk, Karbighaiya Junction, Rajiv Nagar Mor, Boring Road roundabout, Mithapur bus stand gate number 1, Anishabad roundabout, New Secretariat Mor, Ashiana Mor, Chiraiyatand petrol pump roundabout, Jaganpura roundabout New Bypass, Machua Toli Chowk, Tapasya Mor, Rajpur Pul Mor, Kurji Mor, Bhootnath Road to Kanti Factory Mor, Railway station roundabout and Rajendra Nagar Terminal.

Senior officers like the City SP (central) D. Amarkesh, City SP (east) Vishal Sharma and City SP (west) Ravindra Kumar have also been given Hartali Mor, Karbighaiya Junction and Rajiv Nagar Mor respectively to look after.

'They will look after whether traffic rules, including removing encroachments, are being followed or not,' said Maharaaj.

The traffic points have been identified according to the officers' convenience. 'The traffic junctions fall on the route of the officers' houses so that they can monitor the zebra crossings, traffic lights, policemen deputed at those points, needs of traffic police, anti-encroachment drive and so on,' Maharaaj said.

Patna traffic superintendent of police P.K. Das adopted Mithapur bus stand gate number 1.

To streamline traffic in Patna and to ease snarls that choke Patna roads, traffic police had taken many steps in the past such as installation of traffic lights, traffic flow plans such as one-way streets, barricading footpaths, imposition of fine of Rs 600 for violating zebra crossing rule and earmarking autorickshaw stands apart from dedicated parking space for commuters.
