St Xavier's College and St Xavier's College of Management & Technology (Digha) organised a poetry recitation competition and poster-making contest to mark International Women's Day.

The United Nations has declared March 8 as International Women's Day to highlight their achievements throughout history and across nations.

The theme for Wednesday was "women empowerment" which the contestants expressed through words, painting and sketches.

Sony, a second-year arts student, stood first in the poetry recitation contest, followed by Archana Sahni (BCom second year) and Ayushi Mishra (BCom first year) in the second and third positions, respectively.

Ankita, a student of St Xavier's College of Management & Technology, said about the poster-making competition: "No society can develop without the contribution of women. Through poetry and posters, we tried to depict the contribution ofwomen from the ancient times."

Raman's effect

CV Raman

The Central University of South Bihar remembered Nobel laureate and scientist CV Raman on February 28 - celebrated as National Science Day to mark the discovery of the Raman effect.

The university organised a five-day celebration around Raman, who won the Nobel prize in physics in 1930.

Central University of South Bihar public relations officer Mohammad Mudassir Alam said in commemoration of the astounding contribution of Sir CV Raman, a number of events were organised on the university's Gaya campus.

Essay, poster-making and quiz competitions were organised throughout February.

Cash prizes and certificates of merit were awarded to first five rank holders in each category.

Rural push

The Central University of South Bihar on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Council of Rural Institutes for deeper linkage and cooperation in promoting resilient rural India through curriculum accreditation and development of higher education programmes.

Gayatri V. Patil, the registrar of the central university, and D.N. Dash, academic programme specialist - a nominee from the National Council of Rural Institutes under the Union ministry of human resource development - signed the MoU in presence of Central University of South Bihar pro-vice-chancellor O.P. Rai and other officials from the two partners.

As part of the agreement, the National Council of Rural Institutes will help the varsity promote academic activity on rural community resilience and social responsibility, and engage students in rural communities.

Towards this end, the Centre for Development Studies - the nodal department of the Central University of South Bihar for the project - will submit a proposal to the University Grants Commission for setting up a separate centre for fostering social responsibility and community engagement in universities for approval.

Ankit, a development studies student at the university, said: "With this deal, the development studies course will be upgraded, allowing the students to get the best resource material."
