Police are all set to prepare an action plan for foolproof security at Mahabodhi Mahavihara temple in Bodhgaya ahead of the tourist season from October.

Taking exception to security lapses at the temple, Magadh range deputy inspector-general (DIG) of police Nayyer Hasnain Khan has asked Gaya senior superintendent of police (SSP) Vinay Kumar to prepare an action plan and implement it.

The new strategy could ban entry of cellphones, traditional weapons and arms on the temple premises.

Sources said the police officers had been asked to talk to the Bodhgaya Temple Management Committee (BTMC) for setting up a counter where tourists could leave their cellphones safely.

It might come up near the place where tourists leave their shoes.

The DIG held a meeting on Saturday evening in the office of the BTMC with the SSP and the district administration officials to review the security arrangements of the temple.

Some breaches, including poor monitoring of CCTV footages and some visitors entering the temple bypassing the doorframe metal detectors, were discussed.

City superintendent of police Babu Ram, Gaya sadar sub-divisional officer Paritosh Kumar and Mahavihara chief priest Bhikkhu Chalinda were present at the meeting among others.

The DIG has asked to depute a deputy superintendent of police (DSP)-rank officer as nodal officer to monitor the security at the temple. Khan also asked the Gaya SSP to assess the required resources to ensure foolproof security arrangement in Bodhgaya.

Khan said officers and jawans proficient in English should be posted at the Bodhgaya police station for smooth communication with foreign tourists.

The DIG told The Telegraph on Sunday that he had asked the district administration and the police officers to talk to the BTMC authorities for setting up an office for the police force at Mahavihara.

A present, there is no surveillance on the visitors on the pedestal before the entry point to the Mahavihara campus.
