The officials of the women’s helpline have urged Jakkanpur police station to conduct night patrolling outside Chanakya National Law University (CNLU) campus after girl students complained of harassment by youths in the area.

The women helpline’s demand for night patrolling outside the campus of the law cradle is in response to a letter sent by the CNLU to the district administration regarding eve-teasing incidents faced by the students.

Sarita, the counsellor of the helpline, said: “On Monday, we visited the CNLU campus to access the situation. Based on the feedback gathered from CNLU registrar S.P. Singh we have urged the Jakkanpur police station to conduct night patrolling in the area.”

According to sources, the CNLU students have complained about criminals, mostly residing in the Mithapur area, of harassing and eve-teasing them for the past few months. The students complained that youths keep loitering near the CNLU grounds, where the new campus of Aryabhatta Knowledge University is coming up. The ground is adjacent to the CNLU and barbed wires divide the campus of the law cradle and the Aryabhatta Knowledge University site. The 200m stretch falls between the first entrance gate of the CNLU and the second gate.

“Whenever any girl enters the campus or goes outside, the boys at the ground can see us through the wired boundary. They never miss a chance to pass lewd comments,” said a CNLU student. She added that many have complained to the CNLU administration about their everyday trauma but no action has been taken because “the boys were outsiders”.

Registrar Singh said: “Since the land belongs to Aryabhatta Knowledge University, we have written them a letter requesting to construct a boundary wall similar to the one built by National Institute of Fashion Technology on the other side of the campus.”
