Orthopaedic news meet
Bihar Orthopaedic Association (BOA) on Friday urged its members to conduct at least one free surgery on an underprivileged patient on August 4 to mark Bone and Joint Day on August 4. Rajeev Anand, secretary of BOA said: "Not only will the surgery be conducted free of cost, but we will also provide free medicine after the surgery. No fees will be charged for the implant used in the surgery." BOA's decision is in response to the Indian Orthopaedic Association's attempt to register its name with the World Record Academy for conducting the highest number of free surgeries R.N. Singh, patron of BOA, said the Indian Orthopaedic Association has sent a list of directives to be followed for the August 4 programme.
Spot admission at tech cradle
Birla Institute of Technology's (BIT) Patna campus on Friday conducted a spot admission process for its three year Bachelor of computer applications (BCA) courses. Around 20 students were admitted to the courses. The new students had appeared on the institute's BCA merit list, but did not take admission earlier. Sridhar Kumar, in-charge of the admission process said: "All 60 seats of the BCA has been filled and the admission process comes to an end." The institute's new academic session begins on Monday.

Satyarthi on prohibition
Nobel laureate Kailash Satyarthi said his organisation, Bachpan Bachao Andolan, will study the impact of prohibition in Bihar so that examples can be provided to governments in other states which seek to changes their liquor policies. Nitish Kumar suggested the idea to Satyarthi at a function, in the Legislative Council annexe, where the chief minister felicitated him on Friday. Satyarthi's# organisation, which fights for the rights of children, has so far helped 83,000 children in India and abroad. It has rescued thousands of children from sweatshops. A large part of his work was done in Bihar. "I haven't freed them. Instead, they helped me understand, feel and taste freedom," he said.
