Patil to miss convocation

Muzaffarpur, Nov. 12: The convocation of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University tomorrow has brought out mixed emotions.

The function is being held after a gap of a decade but on the flip side governor D.Y. Patil would not be able to grace the occasion owing to some unavoidable reason. He is said to be unwell.

Goa governor Mridula Sinha, who has been requested to grace the occasion as chief guest arrived at Muzaffarpur on Wednesday evening.

Education minister Brishen Patel will arrive this evening.

Vice-chancellor Pandit Palande said Patil would not grace the event owing to some unavoidable reason.

He added that in absence of Patil, he would award medals and certificates to meritorious students and complete necessary customs on the behalf of the governor. District magistrate Anupam Kumar said he had not received any information on Patil's arrival for the convocation till late Wednesday evening.

Nearly 200 gowns have already been distributed among the shortlisted students, who would be awarded medals, degrees and certificates. The university has also sought an undertaking from them to return the gowns after the event. The proctor-cum-spokesperson of the university, Ajay Kumar Shrivastava, said students, who do not return the gowns, would face legal action and FIRs would be lodged.

District police have already stepped up security at the Langat Singh College ground ahead of the convocation. However, Arun Kumar Singh and Harendra Kumar, members of the university senate, echoed a voice of strong dissent on the expenditure on the convocation.
