The historic Gandhi Maidan finally has a guardian.

District magistrate (DM) N. Saravana Kumar has constituted a 21-member committee for its upkeep and beautification. The panel comprises four active ex-officio members, empowered to take the final decision on any resolution. The rest of the 17 members would give suggestions to the active members.

Till Kumar constituted the committee last month, there was virtually no one to take care of the Maidan — a hub of political and cultural activities. Before Id, Independence Day and Republic Day, the district administration had to clean it.

The DM, also the chairman of the panel, told The Telegraph: “We have constituted a dedicated committee, which would look after the maintenance of the Gandhi Maidan. Now, we shall not have to depend on anyone for its maintenance and beautification. The committee will carry out several works, including random inspection in the Maidan.”

Besides the DM, the three other active members of the panel are Patna senior superintendent of police as the vice-chairman, additional collector as the member secretary and nazarat deputy collector as the treasurer of the committee.

Former DM Sanjay Kumar Singh had given a proposal to the state government to create a system for the regular maintenance of the Maidan. Sources said the revenue and land reforms department would approve the panel soon after scrutinising its functions. The committee has also requested the department to allow it to open an account in its name (Gandhi Maidan Maintenance and Beatification Committee) in a public sector bank for depositing the revenue generated instead of keeping it in the government treasury.

After the formation of the panel, the district administration would be able to generate revenue for the Maidan’s maintenance. It would seek the consent of the revenue and land reforms department after deciding on the rate of organising exhibitions or setting up commercial stalls at the Maidan.

Earlier, the DM was the only authorised person to decide on the amount to be charged for organising any commercial, non-commercial, political or religious function at the Gandhi Maidan. Now, instead of one person, the committee would take the decisions.

Kumar, the DM, said: “All-round development of the Maidan and making it environment friendly would be the prime objectives of the panel. We shall also focus on plantation, construction of internal pathways and proper lighting arrangements. The committee’s responsibilities also include encouraging cultural and educational activities as well as developing the Maidan as a healthy resort for the morning walkers.”
