A sub-inspector of Buddha Colony police station has been suspended for not taking action when two girls, allegedly molested on the road on Thursday evening, requested him to lodge a formal complaint.

Two motorcycle-borne men allegedly molested two sisters, who are boarders of a city-based women's hostel in the Boring Road area. When one of them protested, the pillion rider kept dragging her by the hand and the dupatta for up to a distance of 30-40m even as the bike was moving. The incident occurred near the Boring Road roundabout. The men dared to commit the offence at a spot, which lay barely 50m away from a police picket.

The girls only managed to note down the last four digits of the motorbike's registration number. Immediately after the incident, the girl rushed to Buddha Colony police station to lodge a complaint. However, sub-inspector R.D. Burman, who was on duty, not only refused to lodge the complaint but even asked the girls not to lodge an FIR, as it would "land them in trouble".

When senior superintendent of police (SSP) Manu Maharaaj was informed about the incident, he suspended the officer for not taking action.

Additional superintendent of police (operations) Rakesh Dubey said: "Based on the directives of the SSP, Burman has been suspended."

Moreover, Buddha Colony police have registered a complaint in this connection. Sources in the police said sleuths had identified the youths who had molested the girls. The deputy superintendent of police (law and order) Shibli Nomani also visited the hostel to meet the students.

The SSP also directed police personnel from different police stations - Shri Krishna Puri and Buddha Colony - to conduct raids at different places. Police teams from different police stations have nabbed more than a dozen youths. The SSP has also directed station house officers of different police stations to carry out raids at regular intervals.

Sources in the police said most members of bikers' gangs are involved in various kinds of nefarious activities. They added that many members of bikers' gangs had switched to the illegal liquor trade and bootlegging.

The SSP has asked police personnel to conduct raids and take strict action against those indulging in illegal liquor trade. The SSP has also directed that action will be initiated against police officers (SHOs) if liquor is found in areas under their jurisdiction.

Patna police have once again appealed to people to cooperate with police personnel. Residents, especially girls and women, have been requested to lodge complaints at the 100 helpline. They have also urged the people to lodged complaints on the Patna police Whatsapp number 9939919191. The informant's name, mobile number and address will be kept secret whosoever provides information and tip-offs.
