Nikhil Priyadarshi, the elusive accused in the sexual exploitation case of a minor girl belonging to the Scheduled Caste, has threatened to expose politicians and police officials if he was pressured to surrender in court.
Nikhil, son of a retired join secretary-rank officer to the Bihar government, made a phone call in the office of a local Hindi daily on Friday and revealed that he would upload the video clips of those politicians and police officials on social media who were involved in the sex scandal.
Nikhil has been booked under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, as the victim was stated to be a minor. The victim, daughter of a former minister and Congress leader, had lodged a case with the SC/ST police station in Patna in December last year.
Sources in the criminal investigation department (CID), which is probing the case, said Nikhil was close to the son of a former MP from south Bihar and two officials of the Indian Police Service (IPS). One of the officers is posted in Patna.
The MP's son had provided a SIM card to the girl, said to be daughter of a former minister and Congress leader. The politician's son was stated to be a friend of Nikhil, the proprietor of an automobile showroom in the capital.
"All the suspects will be quizzed soon," said an investigating officer. He said raids were conducted at Nikhil's different hideouts in Bihar and outside the state but he could not be arrested.
On Thursday, the anticipatory bail petition of Nikhil was rejected by a local court. The CID's special investigation team (SIT) probing the case was tipped off that he was hiding at Simla in Himachal Pradesh but managed to escape when a police team carried out a raid there.
Another team has been assigned to arrest Brajesh Pandey, a Congress leader who had unsuccessfully contested the 2015 state Assembly election from Govindganj constituency in East Champaran district. Pandey is also on the run ever since his name figured in the scandal.
Pandey's name figured during the course of investigation. The victim, a drop out from a reputable girls' school of Patna, told interrogators that Pandey misbehaved with him when Nikhil had taken her to a flat owned by one Mrinal Kishore on Boring Road.
Pandey later resigned from the post of vice-president of the party. "We have intensified raids to arrest him at the earliest. If he is not arrested or he surrenders in the court, we will obtain property attachment order from the court," a police officer said.
The failure of the police to apprehend the high-profile accused even after two months of lodging of an FIR has raised doubts over the credentials of the investigating officers. "The police officials are under pressure as the main accused (read Nikhil) has connections in the corridors of power that be," alleged a relative of the girl.
A relative of Nikhil's is posted with the CBI. A minister in the Grand Alliance government led by chief minister Nitish Kumar is also close to Nikhil, sources said.
Surprisingly, no arrests have been made so far in the case. The alleged involvement of the cops has created ripples in the police and administrative circles. "For the first time, the names of police officials have surfaced in the sex scandal. Do the cops initiate action against such officials?" said the victim's kin.
The kin said the girl had provided evidence to substantiate her allegation that she was lured by Nikhil and sexually exploited on the pretext of marriage for about a year.
