Patna: Awareness campaigns against firecrackers did not have much impact on residents of Patna.

A three-and-a-half-year-old boy and a 10-year-old boy ruptured their eyes during Diwali celebrations on Thursday. They are being treated at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH)'s emergency wing.

The infant was injured when he was watching a ground-spinner being lit up when suddenly a rocket cracker flew into his right eye. The 10-year-old boy was bursting firecrackers himself.

Doctors at the PMCH performed surgeries on both on Friday. "We cannot assure on regaining visibility as of now," said head of ophthalmology department of PMCH Umesh Prasad Sinha, adding that around 20 cases of eye-related injuries had come to his department since Thursday. "They were all firecracker fallouts," he said.

A source in the PMCH plastic surgery department said a youth had approached the department on Thursday after his eyeballs had come out. "The boy was trying to throw away a bomb when the incident happened," said the source.
