Patna, June 29: Police are all set to come up with an outpost at the Kankerbagh area for more effective crime control.

The outpost, proposed to be established near the New Bypass Road, will particularly look into criminal incidents and mishaps in the rural-urban fringe (RUF) area of Kankerbagh catering to at least a population of one lakh, senior police officers told The Telegraph today.

“The outpost will be located at a distance of around 2km from the Kankerbagh police station near the Patna New Bypass Road, which is at the southern end of the police station area. The other side of the road is a rural belt and hence the spot can be said to be a rural-urban fringe. The post will cater to a population of one lakh along the whole area,” city superintendent of police (SP), Shivdeep Lande said. As many as eight havildars, 16 constables, two inspectors and four assistant sub-inspectors will be looking after the outpost, the SP said.

“One among the many reasons for setting up this outpost is to look into the incidents of frequent accidents happening on the New Bypass Road. Also, areas of Kankerbagh like RMS Colony, Changar village, MIG Sector and New Bypass Road will be looked after by this particular outpost. Also, many lanes of both Indira Nagar and Ashok Nagar, Ramlakhan Path and other newly established localities will be under the purview of the outpost catering to a total population of around 1 lakh,” the officer said. In 2011, three murders were reported and last year, one murder occurred. In 2009, two murders were reported. The murder figures for 2008 rested at one while the same in 2007 was two.

This year, three cases of burglary took place while 2010 witnessed eight such cases. In 2009, fifteen incidents were reported while the figure for 2008 and 2007 rested at eight and 10 respectively.

When it comes to thefts, this year, until now, has seen 13 incidents in the area. The figure for the last year stood at 27 while in 2009, 16 incidents took place. The figure of thefts for 2008 and 2007 rested at 10 and 21 respectively.

“The post, when it comes up, will take care of these incidents. Also, the area being a rural-urban fringe, there are cases of elopement too. The police can look into such cases in a more effective way. This year, until now, there have been at least five accidents on the New Bypass Road. The figure for 2010 rested at three. The new post will cater to the same as well,” Lande added.

The officer added that the motive behind the outpost was to ease the pressure off the Kankerbagh police station.

“Once this outpost becomes a success, more police station areas will be reviewed and the police will come up with more posts wherever necessary. At present, there are around two dozen outposts in Patna,” the officer pointed out.

The people of the area were relieved when they heard the news about the outpost.

Rajiv Kumar, who hails from Ashok Nagar area, said: “It looks to be a good move. With the outpost here, the people can hope for quick police action and a decrease in the number of thefts and burglary.”
