NCP calls for election unity

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) general secretary Tariq Anwar on Saturday said seats would never be an issue for his party in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls because the motive of all opposition parties would be to defeat the BJP. He added that the candidature for the Prime Minister's post will not be a problem for the opposition.

Patna: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) general secretary Tariq Anwar on Saturday said seats would never be an issue for his party in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls because the motive of all opposition parties would be to defeat the BJP. He added that the candidature for the Prime Minister's post will not be a problem for the opposition.

"If I have to give up my seat for it, I will do so happily," said Tariq, who represents the Katihar parliamentary constituency.

Tariq asserted that all opposition parties will contest the general election together despite the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's efforts to stop them from uniting.

Anwar was speaking to mediapersons on the sidelines of the party's state executive meeting here in the state capital. He also added that the candidature for the Prime Minister's post will not be a problem for the united opposition.

"There will be no problem with regard for the candidate for the prime ministerial post," Tariq said.

The Katihar MP also pooh-poohed the controversy created by Congress president Rahul Gandhi hugging Modi followed by the now-famous wink. "If Narendra Modi can forcibly hug foreign guests, what was wrong if Rahul Gandhi hugged him? You all are asking about his wink, but tell me at whom he winked and in what context," Tariq said.
