Patna, May 15: A day after a middle-aged woman and her newly wed husband were hacked to death allegedly by her relatives in Muzaffarpur, a suspect was arrested today and blood-stained clothes and bones were recovered from a house at Raksha Basatpur village under Sakra police station.

Raj Kumari Devi, a 32-year-old widow, married a youth in the court against the wishes of her family members five days ago. When her brothers got the news, they had a heated altercation with Raj, who was staying with her three children at her parents’ house on Sunday night. Enraged, Raj’s brothers allegedly killed Raj and her husband, a tea vendor at Bairia in Muzaffarpur town, on Monday and disposed of the bodies, apparently to mislead the police. An anonymous caller apprised the police of the incident.

Muzaffarpur senior superintendent of police (SSP) Rajesh Kumar visited the spot with a police team today. Raj’s sister-in-law Sunaina was arrested. A case was lodged against the three brothers and two sisters-in-law for killing Raj and tampering with evidence. The other sister-in-law, Sushila, is absconding.

The SSP said: “We recovered blood-stained clothes from Raj’s parents’ house and 14 bones besides remains of bodies from the banks of river Noon at Soneghat. The seized items are being sent to forensic science laboratory in Patna.”
