Over a dozen police personnel were injured in a mob attack near Pipra police station on Tuesday.
The mob was demanding arrest of the killers of Tuntun Thakur, the son of a mukhiya (village head) who was shot dead on Monday evening. When the protest turned violent, police fired several rounds of tear gas shells to disperse the mob.
The protestors blocked the NH-28 near Pipra, stopping vehicular movement for more than two hours. The protesters lifted the blockade after the superintendent of police (SP) Jitendra Rana rushed to the spot.
The protesters also disrupted tracks on the Muzaffarpur-Narkatiaganj section of East Central Railway and movement of trains was restored after 1.30pm, said Rakesh Kumar Tripathi, station superintendent of Bapudham Motihari.
Tuntun was the son of Malti Devi, mukhiya of Kunwarpur panchayat under Pipra police station of the district. He was shot near Hardiya bridge on his way home from Pipra market. He was rushed to a private nursing home in Motihari where doctors declared him dead.
On the statement of his uncle, police have lodged an FIR naming five persons as accused and arrested one of them, said East Champaran SP Rana. Teams constituted under Chakia DSP Chandrika Prasad have been hunting for the absconding accused, the SP added.
Tuntun's father Birendra Thakur had also murdered in 2015, and the case is still sub judice.
