Monsoon nowhere in sight, the state is in the grip of heat wave again.

The Met department on Monday issued heat wave warning across the state. The maximum temperature of the day is expected to shoot up by at least two degrees over the next two days in all the districts.

G.C. Debnath, the director of Calcutta Met department, told The Telegraph: “The Calcutta regional headquarters has issued a heat wave warning for the entire state of Bihar for the next 24 hours.” D.C. Gupta, the director of India Meteorological Department, Patna, said: “Heat wave conditions have been confirmed by our observatories in Patna, Gaya, Bhagalpur, Purnea, Motihari and Sabour (Bhagalpur district).”

Heat wave condition usually does not prevail in the state till the second week of June because monsoon normally arrives by June 13. But with the eastern wing of the south-west monsoon static from June 6, rains will be delayed this year. Weather conditions favourable for the arrival of monsoon would develop in the state from June 15. Till then, the residents of the state will have to bear with the heat.

M. Mohapatra, the director of the cyclone warning division of IMD in New Delhi, told The Telegraph over phone: “The dry north-westerly winds prevailing over the entire Indo-Gangetic plain covering Bihar, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Bengal have created a heat zone in this region. The extreme dry and hot weather conditions in these states will prevail over the next two days. The maximum temperature will soar by two degrees.”

Several residents of the state capital are jittery over the long spell of extreme hot and dry weather.

“This summer season is showing no mercy. The temperature soars so much in the afternoon that it becomes almost impossible to go out. Children are the worst sufferers. Both my son and daughter suffered from heat stroke,” said Surendra Singh, a resident of Gardanibagh.

Patnaites will have to cope with the heat for another week.

“There has been no progress in the eastern wing of the south-west monsoon since June 6 and it is likely to remain in the static mode for the next two-three days because of unfavourable weather conditions. But it will not lead to much delay in the arrival of monsoon in Bihar because the IMD considers a deviation of seven days as normal for arrival of monsoon,” said Mohapatra.

Going by the forecast of the IMD, weather conditions favourable for the arrival of monsoon in the state would develop from June 15.

Abdul Sattar, an assistant professor of meteorology at Rajendra Agriculture University, Muzaffarpur, said the monsoon progression line was stagnant at Gangtok (Sikkim) for the past five days. “The upper tip of the south-west monsoon is likely to remain stagnant for the next two to three days. This, in turn, will delay the arrival of monsoon in Bihar from the expected June 13-15 to June 17-20,” he said.
