Patna, June 24: The BJP today cornered the state government for faulty distribution of foodgrain under the Food Security Act and public distribution schemes.

The state unit plans to stage week-long demonstrations at the block level from June 25 to 30 with “Ration do (give foodgrain), ration card do (give PDS card)” slogans.

On the sidelines of his weekly janata durbar, Sushil Kumar Modi said: “The government implemented the Food Security Act in Bihar in haste. The result was its failure to provide foodgrain to people living below poverty line for the past four to five months.”

Food and consumer protection minister Shyam Rajak said: “As no foodgrain was provided to the government from November last year to January this year from the Food Corporation of India, it was not distributed. Foodgrain for the months of March and April has been distributed to the beneficiaries.”

Under the Food Security Act, every individual living below the poverty line gets 3kg rice and 2kg wheat in a month. In Bihar, around 7.7 crore people, including around 84 per cent of the rural population, are covered under it.

On Monday, residents of Kurthol panchayat under Phulwarisharif staged a demonstration, blocking the Patna-Masaurhi road for hours, as their names were missing in the new ration cards under a new streamlining process.

Modi attacked the government, too, for failing to start paddy procurement this year.

He alleged that Lalu Prasad bargained for a Legislative Council berth for his daughter, Misa Bharti, in a trade-off for support to the JDU government. Rubbishing it, Abdul Bari Siddiqui told PTI: “The BJP leader is frustrated after the RJD extended support and voted for the ruling party candidates in the Rajya Sabha bypolls, foiling his designs to destabilise the JDU.”
