Motihari, Feb. 21: Nearly 100 weavers from East Champaran will take part in the three-day “Rashtriya Kargha Sammelan” in New Delhi from Wednesday to discuss their problems.

The event, organised by Gandhi Smriti & Darshan, is likely to be inaugurated by President Pratibha Patil. Eminent Gandhians, a number of Union ministers and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi would grace the occasion. Prime minister Manmohan Singh is the ex-officio chairperson of the organisation while Tara Gandhi Bhattacharya and Mani Mala are the vice-chairperson and national director of the organization, respectively.

The event has been organised to highlight the importance of khadi and handloom products, said Amar, a member of the committee.

According to Amar, of the 20 karghas (looms) in the district, 10 are in Ramdiha village under Kalyanpur block and Little Flower Leprosy Centre in Raxaul.

Kargha-produced articles and cloth would be put on sale during the three-day meet. Amar said about 600 weavers, along with nearly 200 karghas across the country, are expected to take part in the event.

Amar said problems faced by khadi and handloom weavers, including day-to-day problems related with seed-money, marketing avenues and wages would be discussed.
