Letter to governor against VC

Darbhanga, Feb. 7: A group of activists and teachers from Darbhanga has sent a joint memorandum to the chancellor of universities and Governor Devanand Konwar demanding action against Nand Kishore Sharma, vice-chancellor, Kameshwar Singh Darbhanga Sanskrit University.

The letter states that Sharma, who is charged with financial irregularities worth crores of rupees, has been exempted from official action.

According to the letter, the chancellor seized the power of five outgoing vice-chancellors three months before their terms were supposed to end.

The Sanskrit varsity VC’s term is expiring on March 14, 2011, but no notification debarring him from powers has been issued by the office of the chancellor.

The memorandum has been signed by Rama Nand Thakur, president, Struggle Forum for Retired Teachers and Non-teaching Employees of Mithilanchal, Ajit Kumar Choudhary, senator, Lalit Narayan Mithila University (LNMU), Arun Kumar Bhagat, advocate, Patna High Court, and convener, Justice Forum, Darbhanga, Amod Narayan Singh, organising secretary, Rashtriya Shaikshik Mahasangh, Darbhanga, Sanjay Kumar, Anusuchit Jati Shiksha Manch, Darbhanga, and Krishna Kumar, president, Jan Chetna Manch, Laheriasarai.

The petition requests the chancellor to constitute a vigilance enquiry and demands immediate dismissal of the vice-chancellor.

The letter states that on the direction of then human resource development (HRD) secretary K.K. Pathak, two FIRs had been lodged in June last year at LNMU police station against the VC and his team for misappropriation of government funds above Rs 10 crore. Senior superintendent of police M.R. Nayak had even proved that charges to be true.

A copy of the memorandum has also been sent to chief minister Nitish Kumar, deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi and principal secretary, HRD, Anjani Kumar Singh. All signatories have stated that taking the advantage of his powers, Sharma has allegedly earned money worth crores by breaking norms and avoiding acts and statutes.
