Pritam Bhattacharjee’s relatives have questioned the Government Railway Police’s recent claim that the mystery surrounding the murder of the research scholar from Assam has been cracked.

Kajal Kanti Purkayastha, an uncle of Bhattacharjee, on Sunday told The Telegraph over phone from Guwahati that the youth’s family was in no way satisfied with the investigation by the police and was in favour of an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

On Friday, the Government Railway Police (GRP) had claimed that the fear of being identified by the young research scholar from Silchar in Assam compelled his abductors to eliminate Bhattacharjee in July 2012.

His mutilated body was recovered from a place adjacent to Kataria railway station in Naugachia police district on July 15 last year. The 25-year-old student, who was travelling to Delhi on Awadh-Assam Express, went missing from the Naugachia railway station on July 9 after he gave chase to a group of men who snatched his bag.

Additional director-general of police (rail) P.N. Roy had said the case was solved and the chargesheet against seven of the nine accused has been submitted in court.

Purkayastha, however, expressed doubt over the officer’s version. “We fear that the masterminds of the incident are still out of the police net and efforts are on to protect them. Why has the rail police not yet disclosed the identity of a local influential leader’s husband, whose vehicle was used to carry out the crime?” he asked.

Purkayastha added that the media had reported involvement of 15-20 people in the crime.

“But the police have implicated only nine people. We have lost Pritam forever. His aged mother, Utpala Bhattacharjee, is bed-ridden ever since the incident occurred. Our concern is that that many other persons will face the same fate as Pritam if the real culprits are not arrested and punished,” he said.
