Residents keen on giving the capital a green makeover can dial a number and get saplings planted in front of their houses.

The state government launched the unique tele- service on Monday to seek the residents’ support for the success of a plantation drive in urban Patna.

Deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi inaugurated the drive dubbed “Do you want to plant trees-Are you ready to help?” at the Circuit House. The campaign is part of Van Mahotsava, which also started on Monday. Organised by the environment and forest department, the event would continue till August 9.

The government appealed to the residents, having vacant public land in front of their houses and willing to plant saplings, to consult divisional forest officer Gopal Singh on his cellphone (9431815971) or send a mail at dfopatnafdivision@gmail.com.

“First, the environment and forest department would look into the feasibility of the area where the sapling would be planted. Then the department would put gabions (cages filled with rocks) and plant trees on the land. Those who will be part of the scheme will be expected to extend their support for three years. A database of such people will be prepared,” Modi said.

A representative from the department would also see that the plants are regularly watered. For 400 plants, there will be a water tank each. This will be done to ensure that the plants do not dry up.

Clubs like Rotary and Lions have been asked to extend their support in the drive. Plants from four nurseries in Patna would be made available to organisations and individuals, who want to get started this monsoon.

Apart from this, roadsides of the New Capital circle will undergo landscaping with plants and flowers.
