New-age laboratories and e-libraries, part of a major renovation drive, are set to inject a shot of adrenaline into the heritage Patna Science College.

The education department has sought a detailed development plan from the college administration based on which it would fund the project. Patna University vice-chancellor Arun Kumar Sinha said: “Principal secretary, education, Amarjeet Sinha had asked the college to submit its development plan and had assured to provide funds.”

The college of 1928 vintage is considered as one of best educational institutions in the state for imparting science education, but in recent years, has been crying for attention.

Under the college development plan, a language lab and an e-library would be set up at the institute. The science laboratory would also be upgraded.

Geology department teacher Atul Aditya Pandey said: “We want a remote sensing and geographic information system (GIS) lab at the geology department as part of the facelift programme.”

The remote sensing and GIS lab would help analysis of satellite data with the help of software. Earlier too, the geology department had sought for a remote sensing and GIS lab from the department of science and technology but did get funds.”

Moreover, the college would seek funds for purchase of modern scientific equipment. The language lab would aim at brushing up the communications skills of students with correct pronunciation of English words.

Work on setting up the e-library is in progress. Sixteen computer terminals, along with printers, would be installed at the library to help 16 students sit and download study material from international digital books and magazines.

The students are excited about the renovation plan.

Anil Sahay, a physics graduate, said: “We are happy that the college would get a new look. The e-library would give students an added advantage. Students can easily download reading materials from books of international writers. Foreign research journals and research papers, available on the Internet, would prove to be useful to them.

Work on the roof of the main administrative building is complete, while tiling and plastering of walls are in progress. Once the renovation at the administrative block work at science block and even hostels would be carried out.
