Patna: Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Prasad Yadav had lunch together at a restaurant in Delhi on Friday, a day after the young Bihar leader dubbed Prime Minister Narendra Modi "Gappu" in a tit-for-tat jab at the BJP which needles the Congress vice-president with the moniker "Pappu".

After the lunch, Tejashwi, a former deputy chief minister and now leader of Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, posted four photographs on his Twitter handle, saying: "Thank you @OfficeOfRG for taking me out for wonderful lunch. Feel appreciated and grateful. Again thanks for taking out time out of ur tight schedule."

Tejashwi, 28, the younger son of RJD chief Lalu Prasad, later told The Telegraph that Rahul had invited him.

"Both of us were in Delhi today and it was an informal lunch for which Rahulji had invited me. It was really nice to have lunch with him. He was very cordial and asked about my father, mother, brother and sisters. He enquired about the health of my father and asked me to pass on his best wishes and love to Laluji," he said.

Tejashwi did not disclose the name of the restaurant citing security issues, but said it was an eatery in Lutyens's Delhi and the lunch lasted from 1pm to 2.30pm.

The fare included vegetarian and non-vegetarian appetisers, dry and gravy chicken and fish dishes, and dessert. Rahul had fresh lime juice and Tejashwi stuck to Diet Coke. They rounded off the meal with paan.

"We share a very good chemistry and always meet whenever we get time," Tejashwi said, laughing. "We discussed everything from politics to family."

Tejashwi said Rahul had called him on Thursday night to invite him and the Congress leader's office had made the restaurant booking.

"He was asking about the youths of Bihar and the present political mood in the state. Politicians are also human beings, we do meet informally," Tejashwi said.

The RJD leader had on Thursday called Modi a " gappu" whose graph was going down. The jab came after the Election Commission asked the BJP to drop the word "Pappu" from its electronic advertisement prepared by the Gujarat unit of the party to target Rahul. The word "Pappu" is often used on social media to ridicule Rahul.

Sources close to Tejashwi said a section of the restaurant was reserved for Rahul, who has SPG (Special Protection Group) commando cover.

Tejashwi was also accompanied by his private secretary Sanjay Yadav and private assistant Mani Yadav. After the lunch, many of the restaurant staff members requested Rahul and Tejashwi for selfies, and both happily obliged.

"Discussion took place on overall politics from Bihar to India. He shared his experience that youths have become vibrant. There was no special occasion behind the lunch, it was just an informal meeting over lunch," Tejashwi said.

Asked if Rahul had invited him to campaign for the Congress in poll-bound Gujarat, Tejashwi said: "No such talk took place over the Gujarat election."
