The CBSE Plus Two results declared on Wednesday sprang some pleasant surprises. Fighting odds, several students came out with flying colours.

The most common hardship was monetary. But several students made money matters secondary with steel will, concentration and a little help from their institutions.

Some schools awarded scholarships to bright students coming from not-so-affluent families. Fees were waived off of a few.

Only monetary help does not guarantee success. Teachers played a big role in success stories scripted by students despite hardships. In some cases, seniors played the role of motivators.

Parents were, of course, by their side as always. While fathers of the most worked hard to see smiles in the faces of their “little ones”, mothers were inspiration personified.

“My father works hard for all of us. My mother Bucchi Devi is a homemaker. She always encourages me to study hard,” said Rajesh Kumar Jha of May Flower School, who scored 90.2 per cent in science stream.

Besides money, health issues handicapped a few examinees for a while. But they fought back with iron determination. Pep-talks from parents and teachers made their task a tad easier. Buddies who supported at the hour of crisis became friends forever.

After hard work and hard times, came the hour of success. The feat called for celebrations and they did celebrate — each one in their own way.

Student: Abhinav Aashish

Institution: St Michael’s High School

Stream: Science

Percentage: 94.8

Hurdle: Abhinav was down with jaundice in mid-January. He suffered till March-end, but took the exam in stride

Solution: Self-determination. “I did not panic and had faith in myself and God,” said Abhinav

Inspiration: Parents Sudhir Kumar and Asha Sinha. Friends, especially Akash, Alkesh and Rishav, also stood by him when the chips were down

Future plan: Abhinav wants to be a software engineer and bring laurels to the country

Scholarship relief

Student: Ravina

Institution: Acharya Shri Sudarshan Patna Central School

Stream: Science

Percentage: 89.6

Hurdle: Financial. Her father, Ravi Shankar Kumar, is a policeman. Buying quality books was an uphill task for Ravina since her two brothers and a sister are also students

Solution: Fifty per cent scholarship while studying in Class XI and XII

Inspiration: Parents. Ravina’s mother is Guriya Devi

Future plan: Ravina wants to be an IAS officer

Grateful to school

Student: Deepak Vidyarthi

Institution: International School

Stream: Science

Percentage: 64.4

Hurdle: Poor English and money. Coming from the state board, Deepak’s English was not up to the mark. No tuition because of poor economic status compounded the problem of Deepak, whose father is a driver

Solution: The school waived off admission and other fees of Deepak. With strong will power and focus, he tide over the hardships he came across

Inspiration: School principal F. Hasan

Future plan: Deepak wants to be an IAS officer

Student: Rajesh Kumar Jha

Institution: May Flower School

Stream: Science

Percentage: 90.2

Hurdle: Poor financial status. Rajesh’s father Birendra Narayan Jha is an autorickshaw driver

Solution: Strong determination and focus

Hard work helps

Hurdle: Abhishek passed Class X from Siwan. Coming from there and competing with peers in Patna was an uphill task for him. To him, chemistry was a hard nut to crack

Solution: Hard work. “It goes a long distance in solving someone’s problem,” says Abhishek. So does a motivator, in his case it was his class teacher Ajay Kumar Jha

Inspiration: Amit (now an IITian), a senior of Abhishek in the same school
