Purnea, Jan. 28: To facilitate a separate cell for counselling and placement of students, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has granted Rs 2 lakh to Purnea College.
This comes after sustained efforts from the college over the past five years in terms of helping students find job placements.
Purnea College has organised several career counselling sessions at its own expense. The college has also been largely successful in helping its students get placement calls.
The college has also invited various organisations and organised career counselling sessions. The UGC took note of the seriousness of the college authorities to help its students get job placement.
The grant is aimed at improving the present facilities and help Purnea College establish a permanent career-counselling cell on the premises. The college authorities have said the funds would help the do the needful in a more appropriate manner and carry out placement activities.
The career and counselling cell would function under the chairmanship of Ranjit Mishra. It would be equipped with facilities such as computer, printer, internet and fax machine.
The business development officer of Avalon Academy of Aviation, Siliguri, Tshering Topqay Bhutia, informed students of the college about the various courses, including airport management, hospitality management and travel and tourism management while addressing the first session.
“The cell will make available the requisite information regarding career and placement services to the third-year students of the courses,” T.V.R.K. Rao, the principal of the college, told The Telegraph.
He said other companies would be invited to the college so that the students do not have any dearth of opportunities.
The college has already started vocational courses including BBA, BCA among others, whose students would directly get the benefits of the career counselling and the newly set up placement cell.
Along with students of the professional courses, even those from the general stream could also avail a proper guidance in furthering their careers.
“With the sustained efforts of the college, some companies including Wipro, Mahindra, and NIIT, each having an international repute had already come to the college campus for recruiting the students. We are happy that the UGC took note of the efforts we made. The UGC has granted money to run a special cell for placement and career counselling,” said Ranjit Mishra, the chairperson of the counselling cell told The Telegraph.
